Torn by Stephanie Guerra

Torn by Stephanie Guerra, out this Sunday on the 1st, is one of those stories that a lot of people can relate to...at least I did.
It's the story of Stella Chavez, a senior in high school, who was used to living her life safe.  However, that was before Ruby came into her life.  Ruby is new in town.  Lives with a step mother, who could care less what she does, and so Ruby goes out partying, starts dating a MUCH older man, and involved in some drugs.

Stella, while she loves Ruby for her outspokenness, has a secret from her families past that still gives her trouble to this day.  When Ruby starts doing drugs, Stella starts seeing some issues with their friendship.  However, their friendship really has opened up Stella to be a little open, and not in a bad way.

However, things go even further wrong when Stella's old friends tell her they don't want anything to do with her, especially when she is hanging out with a "slut", and Stella's dealing with boyfriend problems and family issues, of trying to watch over her two siblings, while her mom goes to work everyday.  Stella's been having problems dealing with everything, and it's finally getting to her...

Will Stella and Ruby remain friends? Will Ruby realize that she has issues that need to resolved?  Find out the answers and many more when you read Torn.

I enjoyed this book.  For one the writing and story reminds me between a mix of Simone Elkeles and Sarah Dessen's writing.  Both are two of my favorite authors, and so I really enjoyed reading a story dealing with the issues of racism, gang related, like Elkeles' Perfect Chemistry Trilogy deals with, and the realistic feel that Dessen's story have.

This is a serious story, no humor really.  So if you're in a depressive mood, then maybe don't pick up this novel and instead pick up something from someone like Meg Cabot, or Janet Evanovich, both hilarious writers.
